Skype is a freemuim voice over IP service and instant messaging client , currently developed by Microsoft Skype Division , the name was derived from sky and peer . Skype was first released in August 2003 . Skype had 725 million registered users at the end of 2011 . It was bought by Microsoft in 2011 by 8.5 billion dollars . Microsoft Skype division headquarters is in Luxembourg , but most of the development team and the 44 % employees of the division is still situated in Tallinn and Tartu , Estonia . Registered users of the Skype are know as unique skype name , and may be listed in the Skype directory . Skype allows this registered users to communicate both through instant messaging and voice chat , Voice chat allows to chat with telephone pairs of users and conference calling , and uses a proprietary audio codec . Skype text chat client allows group chat , emoticons , story chats and history and editing of previous messages . Offline messages were implemented in the version of beta version 5 , but removed after few weeks without notification . The usual messages is similar to instant messaging users , user profiles , online status indicators , and so on are also included . Skype is software like Yahoo Messenger most of its features are almost same , but from my point of view you should use Skype its really good for its work .
