God Of War 3 is a third person action adventure video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment , released on March 16 , 2010 , the game is the fifth installment in the God Of War series and the seventh and last chronologically . Loosely based on Greek mythology , the game is set in an ancient Greece with vengeance as its central motif . The players controls the protagonist and the former God Of War Kratos , following betrayal from the hands of his father and the king of the Olympian Gods , Zeus . Reigniting the great war , Kratos ascends Mount Olympus until he is abandoned by the Titan Gala . Now guided by the spirit of Athena , Kratos fights with Mons , Gods , and Titans in a search of Pandora , the key to open Pandora Box is to defeat Zeus . The gameplay is similar to the previous installments , and focuses on combo based combat , achieved through the players main weapon , the Blades Of Exile and secondary weapons acquired through out the game . It uses quick time events , where the players completes many various game controller actions in timed sequences to defeat stronger enemies and bosses . The players can use up to four magical attacks and a power enhancing ability as alternative combat options . The game also features puzzling and platforming features . God Of War III offers a revamped magic system , more on screen enemies , new camera angles and downloadable contents .
